Food from a Giant. Manggis (Koompassia excelsa), also known as Ginoo, is one of the tallest tropical species in the world and the second tallest tree species recorded in the Philippines, only second to Toog (Petersianthus quadrialatus). The tree can attain a majestic height of up to 80+ meters. It can be found in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines. In the country, it is restricted to the island of Palawan, in lowland primary forests.
The manggis tree has culinary uses among locals. The seeds can be eaten raw, roasted, or sweetened with sugar and turned into a delicacy similar to bandi. The taste of the seeds is somewhere between watermelon and sunflower seeds.

Manggis is also home to giant honey bees (Apis dorsata), which produce honey, locally known as dugos, an important forest product for indigenous communities in Palawan.
Its conservation status is listed as Endangered in the DENR List of Threatened Philippine Flora.
